Shabbat, October 31, 2026 · Portion #4: Vayera — “He Appeared.”

Torah: Genesis 18:1–22:24 · Haftarah: 2 Kings 4:1–37 · Gospel discussion selection: Luke 17:28–37.

Welcoming, praying, and trusting

Vayera opens with Adonai appearing to Abraham, who welcomes three visitors with generous hospitality. The promise of a son invites Abraham and Sarah to trust beyond what seems possible. Abraham’s intercession for Sodom raises questions about justice, mercy, and our concern for others.

The portion continues through the deliverance of Lot, the birth of Isaac, and the trials within Abraham’s family. In the binding of Isaac, Abraham faces a profound test of trust, and Adonai provides. These passages invite careful reading and honest reflection rather than quick, prescribed answers.

Think WITH Him

Seth King’s study guide invites us to consider what Adonai’s words and actions reveal about His thoughts toward humanity, toward each of us, and about His purposes and invitations. Read the Torah and Haftarah together, then consider Luke’s account as an additional Messianic perspective. The Gospel selection should be compared with the class’s earlier syllabus.

Use the observation space and three weekly reflection questions to record what you notice, seek His heart, and return to these readings throughout the week.
