Erev Shabbat Challah

A soft six-strand braid with honey and olive oil — two loaves for the Shabbat table.
Ingredients
- 4 cups bread flour
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 2 eggs plus 1 for wash
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm water
Method
Proof the yeast in warm water with a spoon of honey. Mix in oil, eggs, honey, then flour and salt. Knead 10 minutes, rise 90 minutes, braid, rise 45 minutes, brush with egg and bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes.

Apples, walnuts, honey and sweet wine — the taste of remembrance at the seder.
Ingredients
- 3 apples, finely diced
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1/4 cup sweet red wine or grape juice
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Method
Combine everything in a bowl, mash lightly with a fork until it holds together, and chill at least an hour before serving.

A hearty beef, bean and barley stew that cooks overnight so no work is done on Shabbat.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef chuck, cubed
- 1 cup dried beans, soaked
- 1/2 cup pearl barley
- 4 potatoes, quartered
- 1 onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic
- Paprika, salt, pepper, 6 cups broth
Method
Layer onion and garlic, then beef, beans, barley and potatoes. Season, cover with broth, and cook on low overnight (8–10 hours). Serve at midday after service.

A crowd-sized sheet-pan chicken glazed with honey, sesame and garlic.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs chicken thighs
- 1/3 cup honey
- 3 tbsp sesame oil
- 3 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Method
Whisk the glaze, coat the chicken and marinate 30 minutes. Roast at 425°F for 30–35 minutes, basting once, then scatter sesame seeds before serving.
