Meaning
Maʿăśēr = “a tenth.” The term appears in Torah and later writings to denote the holy portion set apart to Hashem from Israel’s produce and livestock.
Context
Ancient Israel was an agrarian theocracy. Land, harvest, and herds were covenant gifts; the tithe ritually acknowledged Yahweh’s ownership and sustained temple worship and the priestly tribe.
